Served in the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as a private, sergeant major, first lieutenant, and captain from October 8, 1861, to August 17, 1865. Wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga in Walker County, Georgia, on September 19, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Atlanta in Atlanta on July 31, 1864. Prisoner of war from July 31, 1864 to March 10, 1865. Paroled at Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland, on March 10, 1865.
