Jackson County, Kentucky, farmer and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of M. C. Hughes and Elizabeth Hughes. Married to Mary Jane Anderson Hughes. Father of James T. Hughes, William Hughes, Merida Hughes, Francis Hughes, and Nancy G. Hughes. Farmer in Owsley County, Kentucky, in 1850. Farmer in Jackson County in 1860. Served in the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a first lieutenant from January 15, 1862, to February 9, 1863. Died in military service in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on February 9, 1863.
