Postmaster and county surveyor of New Salem, Illinois. Practiced law with John T. Stuart, Stephen T. Logan, and William Herndon in Illinois. Member of the Whig Party. Member of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois from Sangamon County, Illinois, from 1834 to 1842. Member of the United States House of Representatives from the 7th District of the State of Illinois from 1847 to 1849. Unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois in 1858. Member of the Republican Party. Member of the National Union Party. President of the United States from 1861 to 1865. Assassinated on April 14, 1865.
