Kentucky soldier. Ohio native. Son of Salmon D. Buell and Eliza Buell. Married to Margaret Hunter Mason Buell. Graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1841. Served in the U.S.-Mexican War as first lieutenant and captain. Assistant adjutant general from 1848 to 1849. Promoted to lieutenant colonel and brigadier general. Commanded the Department of the Ohio from November 1861 to October 1862. Resigned from the United States Army on June 1, 1864. President of the Green River Iron Company from 1865.
