Agency responsible for auditing the state's general accounts and the accounts of all state agencies and county governments; all private and semiprivate agencies receiving or handling any state funds; and all state revenue collections. The 1850 Constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky made the Auditor an elected position, with a four-year term. The Auditor of Public Accounts served as the official accountant, comptroller, and tax collector for the commonwealth. Civil War-era auditors: Grant Green (1859-1863); A. T. Samuels (1863-1867).
