The first Bank of Tennessee was chartered on November 20, 1811, and closed when its charter ended in 1841. The second Bank of Tennessee coexisted with the first, from 1820 to 1832. The third Bank of Tennessee was established in 1838, with branches in Athens, Clarksville, Columbia, Memphis, Rogersville, Shelbyville, Somersville, Sparta, and Trenton. Relocated to Chattanooga in February 1862 due to the Civil War. Records later moved to Georgia and South Carolina, until confiscated by the U.S. Army in 1865. Granville C. Torbett was bank president from 1861 to the end of the Civil War.
