Dear Sir;

I am instructed by the Secretary of War, to request that you will be so kind, as to state the circumstances of the theft of which late Lieut Buffum Ohio. Vols. is said to have been convicted in your court.

This young man rendered valuable services to the government at an early period of the rebellion, in consideration of which, should the nature of his offense warrant it, it is deemed but proper that executive clemency should be invoked in his behalf;

In connection with a statement of the more salient points of the crime, you will please mention any matter of mitigation, should such have been disclosed on the trial, or be otherwise known to you.
