Tell the Story

Tell the Story: A Short Story Competition

“I live on the border beset on every hand with difficulty…”

-Vincent Taylor to Thomas E. Bramlette, September 29, 1863

Can you imagine what it would be like to experience Kentucky during the Civil War? Be inspired by the stories here. And write your best fiction.

Download the competition guidelines, the scoring rubric, and a flyer (to share the news!) here:

Of course there's a prize. The first-place story will receive a cash prize and an opportunity to appear on "Think Humanities," the podcast from Kentucky Humanities, hosted by Bill Goodman. Prizes will be awarded at the 2020 Kentucky Book Fair in Lexington, Kentucky.

Submit your story by July 31, 2020 through this form. Only students enrolled at the undergraduate level are eligible to enter.

This short story competition is presented by the Kentucky Historical Society in partnership with Kentucky Humanities.
