Henry County, Kentucky, attorney and trustee. Virginia native. Son of John Mathews and Sarah McDowell Mathews. Married to Frances L. Beazley Matthews in Woodford County, Kentucky, on January 2, 1838. Father of John W. Mathews, Joseph D. Mathews, Frank Mathews, Anna M. Mathews, and Sally Mathews. Graduate of Transylvania Law School in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1837. Trustee of Henry Academy and Henry Female College in New Castle, Kentucky. Attorney in Henry County in 1860.
