Kenton County, Kentucky, attorney and politician. Benton, New York, native. Married to Angelina Clemons Benton in 1832. Father of Mortimer Benton Jr., John Benton, William Benton, and Cordelia Benton. Studied law in Indiana, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky. Mayor of Covington from February 24, 1834, to 1835. City clerk in Covington in 1835. Member of Covington City Council from 1839 to 1851. Attorney at Benton and Mooar in partnership with Daniel Mooar in Covington in 1844. President of the Covington & Lexington Railroad from 1853 to 1856. Attorney at Benton and Nixon in Covington until 1861. Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from Kenton County 1863 to 1865. Member of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1865 to 1866.
