Green Co Ky May 25^th 1865
To His Excellency T E Bramlett

your Petitioner Nathan Warren a citizen of Green County would respectfully state to your Excellency that at the last May term of the Green Circuit Court he was fined the Sum of twenty dollars for the alledged Offence of retailing Spirits without license Your Petitioner would respectfully state to your Excellency that He had a Small amount of Spirits manufactured by himself and that he was informed by the United States Deputy assessor for Green County that he was liable to a heavy fine for not taking out license as a distiller and that unless he obtained Said license that he would enforce the law against him your Petitioner states that in order to avoid any further difficulty that he obtained said license and paid the tax on said spirits amounting to almost as much as the spirits were worth your Petitioner states that he was informed by said Assessor that he had then a right to sell said spirits by retail or in any other way that he might desire and that he did retail said spirits by the pint or in any quantity that his neighbors wanted it He states that he did not have more than 75 gallons of Spirits and that it is the first time that he ever dealt in the article in any way He states that it was not his intentio^n^ to violate the law in any way whatever, & that he was acting in good faith believing that he had a right to retail Spirits after obtaining license as above Stated

Your Petitioner States that he is poor & hard run and that he has a helpless family, that his wife has been Confined to her room for nearly twelve months and that he is wholly unable to pay said fine without selling his little property Your Petitioner would again state to your Excellency that he had no intention to violate the law, and that he thought he had the right to retail Spirits under the license obtained and that it is his first Offence and that it Shall be his last

Your Petitioner would further State that he would not appeal to your Excellency but that he is poor and his family are in great need & that he is entirely unable to pay Said fine without selling his property which is absolutely needed for the comfort of his family wherefore your Petitioner would request your Excellency to remit Said fine and as in duty bound he will ever pray &c

We the undersigned would respectfully state to your Excellency that we are well acquainted with the Petitioner Nathan Warren & we have always regarded him as an honest sober good citizen We have no hesitation in saying that Mr Warren acted in good faith, and that he thought he had a right to retail spirits as stated in his Petition He is quite Poor & he has an afflicted family and we think his case is of that Class which merits the intervention of the Executive
