Dear Sir.

There was some feeling the other day in our town on the occasion of firing guns for Major Anderson which met with the hearty disapproval of Many persons especially of the Breckinridge men which came very near resulting in a serious difficulty. My brother James T. Berry who is a minuteman at Memphis happened to be in town on the occasion and his wearing a Blue Cockade seemed to excite some persons verymuch who have been constantly abusing him & calling him ^a^ traitor. and by the advice of his friends he carried a ^small^ pistol which some of the dirty submissionits in this benighted abolition Corner of my native state felt was a great outrage against law & order he had not drown it upon any one nor has he Ever been before a legal tribunal in this State for any offence before=is the reason I ask the interposition of executive clemency, The fine was 15$. inflicted before E W Hawkins, Mayor of the city on the 16^th day of Jany 1861.
