To his Excelency Beriah Magoffin — Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky

We the undersigned petitioners would respectfully represent to your Excelency, that at the March Term 1861 of the Simpson Equity and Criminal Court John Alexander was fined twenty dollars under a charge of having been guilty of a misdmeanor by permitting slaves to visit and remain about his house, in which he kept spiritous liquors for sale, and when on trial it was never in proof before the Jury, that he kept spiritous liquors, and further that we believe this Indictment together with others, was and has been prosecuted through malice= M^r Alexander is a man of moderate means and is dependant upon his own manuel and mental Exertions for a livelihood. We therefore petition your Excelency to remit said fine of twenty dollars believingit to beright, fair, andhonest so to do
