John W. Prince was fined at the Greenup Circuit Court, May Term 1861, the sum of $70 for fighting, and M^r Hugh Craycraft, a worthy and respectable citizen of the county, became his security on the replevin bond, Prince is wholly unable to pay, and M^r Craycraft asks a release of the judgment. He is a good citizen, a poor man, with a large family, and I respectfully unite with him in asking that the judgment be remitted

D^r Magoffin — The above statement is true as I understand from M^r. Stanton the commonwealths Atty for this district, and from other gentlemen of standing and character, in whom I have full confidence. My Judgment is that the fine, at least as much of it as you have power over ^should^ be remitted — A respite would only defer the day of payment, & at the expiration of the time if the present condition of affairs continue, he would be as little able to pay as at present. I hope therefore you will remit this fine as it is one among the few cases of true merit that come before your Excellency.
