On Monday evening last, Dr W A Norwood, one of our most prominent & respected citizens, was murdered by a runaway slave belonging to Mrs Pentecost of this county. The facts are briefly these — Norwood discovered him in his stable loft & ordered him to come down. He refused, Norwood sent to the house for his gun-While the messenger was still absent the negro fired from the loft shooting N through the heart & then made his escape. It is feared that he has gone to Indiana (where the stepfather of his mistress lives & who harbored him for four months last year while runaway) and the citizens here believe that it will require a large reward to ensure his apprehension. They have therefore requested me to inform your excellency of these facts and to ask of your immediate action upon them
