At the November of the Graves Circuit Court for 1862 the Grand Jury of said County indicted Freeman Halbrooks for an assault & battery on his neice Ann Halbrooks and the case was tried and Said Freeman Halbrooks fine a One Hundred and fifteen Dollars — The facts in the case were these Freman Halbrooks and the mother of Ann was both living with the Father John Halbrooks; an old & respected citizen of our County the control of the farm and in fact everything on the place was given up to Freeman by the old man in Sept last whilst they were all engaged in cutting & hawling tobacco Ann Halbrooks a young girl about 12 or 13 years old was watching the gap to keep out the stock & whilst the others were gone with a load of Tobacco she went into the Tobacco patch & pulled up all the water melon vines Freeman for the without passion or to injure her cut a small haggle twig and struck her ten or twelve times & this is the alledged assault & battery on which he was fined the old man Halbrooks was a witness & stated that there was no malice in the whole affair but that Freeman done what he did for the girls own good we think under the circumstances Halbrook being a very poor
that this is a case which calls for Executive interposition.
