To His Excellency
Governor Robertson Govrnar of the Commonwealth of Kentucky

Your Petitioner James Denton would respectfully represent unto your Excellency that in the spring of 1861 he had a stud Colt and contracted to let him to a mare of one of his neighbors for the sum of 4[...] and that he was indicted by a Grand jury of the county of Fleming under the statute made and provided in such case and that at the September term 1861 of the Fleming Circuit Court he confessed a Judgement for Twenty five dollas upon which execution had issued and will be collected if not remitted by your excellency Your petitioner would further state that at the time he let the stud colt to said mare he did not know that it was a violation of the law and when he ascertained that it was he did not charge for the services of the colt He further states that he is a law abiding man and has never had a suit of any kind against him In view of all the circumstances your petitioner prays the interposition of your excellency discharging him from the
payment of said fine except costs & fees &c

The facts stated above by Mr Denton are true and it was expressly understood by Mr Denton and Col R H Stanton who was at that time Commonwealths Atty that he Stanton in view of all the facts in the case ~~that he Stanton~~ would petition Governor Magoffin & have the fine remitted having paid to Col Stanton his commission and the only reason that I can assign why it was not done is the the unfortunate troubles we have had in the Country I am personally acquainted with Mr Denton and know him to be an honest man but poor and industrious and hope you will feel free to remit the fine as it is a matter of some importance to Mr Denton
