Dear Sir

At the last term of the Bracken Circuit Court a gentleman by the name of John Elliott was fined for giving a slave a drink of liquor -- It was done under the following circumstances --

M^r Elliott is, & was at the time a Hotel Keeper, and gave some young gentleman an oyster supper -- the ~~owner~~son of the owner of the slave being one of the party -- upon that occassion in the presence of this young man, the son of the owner of
the slave, M^r Elliott give said negro a dram -- This is the whole case -- For this M^r Elliott was fined at the suggestion, or rather information of an Enemy, not the owner of the slave or any of his family -- As soon as he was indicted, M^r Elliott appeared before the Judge & confessed & was fined -- He did not for a moment dream under such circumstances, in the presence of the negro^s^{youngmaster, he would ever be subjected to any difficulty -- He informs
me that the Commonwealths Attorney, & Judge addressed you a letter about the 2^nd of this month asking the remission of said fine -- Not having received an Answer, he fears you did not receive the communication -- & requests me to write again --}

M^r Elliott is a gentleman of integrity & respectable standing in the community in which he lives, and I beleive he intended no wrong, & under the circumstances the fine ought to be remitted --

I hope if consistent with your views of duty
you will remit the fine
