Confederate general. Warrenton, North Carolina, native. Married to Eliza Brooks Ellis Bragg on June 7, 1849. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1837. Served in the 3rd U. S. Artillery Regiment in Florida as a lieutenant during the Second Seminole War and later with the same unit in the U.S.-Mexican War. Resigned his commission on December 31, 1855. Sugar plantation owner near Thibodaux, Louisiana. Appointed to the Louisiana state military board on December 12, 1860. Served in the Confederate States Army as major general, brigadier general, full general, from February 20, 1861, to June 17, 1862, when he assumed command of the Army of Mississippi. Reorganized his forces after the battle of Perryville and established the Army of Tennessee until relieved of command on November 29, 1864. Military adviser to Jefferson Davis until taking command of coastal defenses in North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina, and a corps in North Carolina, from October 1864 until his capture and parole on May 9, 1865.
