General (C.S.A.). St. Augustine, Florida, native. Graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1845. Served in the U.S.-Mexican War. Mathematics instructor at the United States Military Academy from 1849 to 1852. Served in the United States military as a lieutenant, captain and major until 1860. Served as a lieutenant colonel, brigadier general, and major general in the C. S. A. army from 1861 to 1865.
