Captain in the 1st Tennessee Infantry in the Mexican-American War. Promoted to colonel of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Resident of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1850. Relocated to California from 1850 to 1853. Major general of the Tennessee State Militia. Farmer in Davidson County, in 1860. Brigadier general in the Army of Tennessee of the Confederate Army from July 1861 to March 1862. Promoted to major general on March 10, 1862 and served until the end of the war.
