Georgia politician and soldier. Jefferson County, Georgia, native. Son of John Cobb and Sarah Cobb. Married Mary Ann Lamar Cobb in 1835. Father of John A. Cobb, Lamar Cobb, Howell Cobb, Jr., Mary Ann Lamar Cobb, Sarah Mildred Cobb, and Andrew Jackson Cobb. Graduated from the University of Georgia in 1834. Solicitor general for the Western Judicial Circuit of Georgia in 1837. Representative of Georgia's sixth district in the U.S. Congress from 1843 to 1851. Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851. Governor of Georgia from 1851 to 1853. Member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1855 to 1857. Speaker of the U.S. Treasury from 1857 to 1860. President of the Provisional Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1862. Appointed colonel of the 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on July 15, 1861. Promoted to brigadier general February 13, 1862. Appointed major general of the District of Georgia and Florida on September 9, 1863. Surrendered April 20, 1865.
