U.S. Army soldier. Pennsylvania native. Married to Jerusha Wilcox Sturgis. Father of Nina J. Sturgis, James G. Sturgis, Ella M. Sturgis, Mary T. Sturgis, and Samuel Davis Sturgis, Jr. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1846. Commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Served as a lieutenant of dragoons in the U.S.-Mexican War. Promoted to first lieutenant and captain after the war. Selected as major of the 1st Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) when the Civil War commenced. Promoted to brigadier general for the Department of Ohio on August 10, 1861. Served as chief of cavalry for the Department of Ohio from December 13, 1863, to April 10, 1864.
