Louisville, Kentucky, soldier. New Jersey native. Married to Mary Fitzsimmons McDowell in Jefferson County on May 19, 1860. Father of Anna McDowell, Marguerette McDowell, and Mary McDowell. Served in the 28th Kentucky Infantry (U.S.A.) as 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, and captain from January 23, 1862, to June 15, 1865.
