Household owned sixteen enslaved persons in Caldwell County in 1860. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a hospital steward from December 13, 1861, to June 1862. Served in the 20th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a second lieutenant and acting quartermaster from June 28, 1862, to February 1, 1863. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as an assistant surgeon from April 10, 1863, to July 15, 1865.
