New York soldier. Erie County, New York, native. Son of Clark Merwin Carr and Delia Ann Torry Carr. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1850. Served in the United States Mounted Rifles as a second lieutenant from July 1, 1850, to March 3, 1855. Served in the 1st United States Cavalry as a first lieutenant and captain from March 3, 1855 to August 3, 1861. Served in the 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry (U.S.A.) as colonel from August 16, 1861 to March 7, 1862. Wounded at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Benton County, Arkansas, on March 7, 1862. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 7, 1862. Commanded several divisions in the Union Army including in the VII and XVI Corps.
