Indiana attorney, politician, and soldier. Posey County, Indiana, native. Son of Abiel Hovey and Frances Peterson Hovey. Married to Mary Ann James on November 24, 1844. Father of Esther Hovey, Enoch James Hovey, Charles James Hovey, and Mary Anne Hovey. Served on the Indiana Supreme Court from May 8, 1854 to December 10, 1855. Served as a United States District Attorney from 1856 to 1858. Unsuccessful Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1858. Attorney in Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana, in 1860. Served in the 24th Indiana Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as colonel from July 31, 1861 to April 28, 1862. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers on April 28, 1862. Brevetted Major General of Volunteers to date from July 4, 1864. Commanded the Military District of Indiana. Resigned on October 7, 1865.
