Resident of Louisville Kentucky, in 1850. Clerk in Louisville in 1860. Served in the Second Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as a a captain, major, and colonel

from June 3, 1861 until June 19, 1864. Served in the 114th United States Colored Troops (U.S.A.) as a colonel from July 5, 1864 through December 31, 1865. Commanded a brigade in the Union Army XXV Corps.
