Chief supply office for the U. S. Army. This office operated a system of field depots and a transportation network to deliver the goods to the soldiers, also responsible for burial of war dead and care of national cemeteries from 1862. Civil war-era U. S. Quartermasters General: Brigadier General Thomas Sidney Jesup (May 1818 - June 1860), Brigadier General Joseph E. Johnson (June 1860 - April 1861), Major General Montgomery C. Meigs (April 1861 - February 1882).
