Edgar County, Illinois, attorney, soldier, and Adjutant General. Illinois native. Son of James Madison Boyle and Sarah Ann Decker Boyle. Married to Jane "Jennie" Porter Looney Boyle in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, on September 17, 1863. Attended school in Edgar County, Illinois, in 1850. Attended Centre College in Boyle County, Kentucky, in 1858. Attorney in Edgar County in 1860. Served in the Army of the Ohio (U.S.A.) as assistant adjutant general. Served in the 9th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as lieutenant colonel from August 22, 1862, to August 21, 1863. Adjutant General of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from September 1, 1863, to August 1, 1864.
