Sir, We beg leave to petition your Excellency to commission Maj Frederick Slater to the vacant Lieut Colonelcy of this Regiment occasioned by the death of Lieut Col Wm O Boyle, And also Capt Joseph Lawson to the vacant Majority occasioned by the promotion of Maj Slater, If any other persons have been commissioned, we earnestly beseech you to have their commissions revoked and commission Maj Slater & Capt Lawson as aforesaid, for the following reasons,

1^st Because of their superior qualifications,
2^ond Because they have always bore the part of brave & skillful officers in every fight & skirmish in which they have been engaged,
3^rd Because their promotion will give almost universal satisfaction in the Regt boath among the officers & men, and Render the Regiment more efficient, than it would be by the promotion of any other persons to said positions.
4^th Because we understand that
Col M Graham who is sick in Hspt^l at Louisville has or is about to offer his resignation and on that account will probably not recommend any one for either of these positions,

We have not the least doubt but that these recommendations meet his -- the Co^lns -- hearty approval
