Fourteenth governor of Indiana, attorney, judge, and politician. Wayne County, Indiana, native. Son of James Throck Morton and Sarah Miller Morton. Married to Lucinda M. Burbank Morton in Wayne County, Indiana, on May 15, 1845. Father of John M. Morton, Mary E. Morton, Lilias Morton, Walter S. Morton, and Oliver Throck Morton. Attended Miami University in Butler County, Ohio, in 1843. Read law with John S. Newman in Wayne County, Indiana, in 1845. Admitted to the bar in Indiana in 1847. Attorney in Wayne County in 1850. Circuit judge for the 6th Judicial District of the State of Indiana in 1852. Member of the Republic Party. Unsuccessful candidate for Governor of the State of Indiana in 1856. Attorney in Wayne County in 1860. Lieutenant Governor of the State of Indiana from January 14, 1861, to January 16, 1861. Governor of the State of Indiana from January 16, 1861, to January 24, 1867, following the resignation of Henry S. Lane.
